His research and teaching focused on wetland ecology and biogeochemistry, wetland creation and restoration, ecological engineering and ecosystem restoration. He founded and was editor-in-chief for 25 years of the international journal \u003ci\u003eEcological Engineering\u003c\/i\u003e and was a Stockholm Water Prize Laureate in 2004.
