The Year the Rain Didn't Stop

A triple Eisner-nominated cartoonist pens a story of climate change and immigration stress in the mossy sea-soaked islands of Norway.

As the glaciers melt and the rains fall, the waters begin to rise. As Belgium slowly sinks, Ruth and her family realize they’ve got to emigrate to the Lofoten Islands in Norway. During the migration the family is separated and while Ruth, her mom, and her grandson Tommy acclimate to the stricter government regulations in their new home, they desperately search for Tommy’s missing parents. 

With dazzling and pulsing watercolors, Flemish cartoonist Judith Vanistendael tackles both the climate and immigration crises with a light-heartedness that captures the spirit of the landscape and the people of Northern Europe.
