Description
Bringing together work in photography, ceramics, and painting, this volume puts this family of artists’ singular practices in dialogue for the first time.

For the Woodman family, art was not simply a profession but a shared language spoken in studios, the spaces in which they lived, and during travels abroad. Betty and George met in 1950, beginning a partnership that would shape more than six decades of artistic and family life. Their home became an atmosphere of experimentation and curiosity, where their children, Francesca and Charles, grew up surrounded by materials, ideas, and the rhythms of artmaking.

Betty’s work drew on the history of ceramics but she pushed the medium in new ways toward sculpture and architecture. George, working in painting, photography, and installation, pursued a more conceptual path, exploring systems of perception and philosophical inquiry. Francesca, whose brief career has become legendary, produced a haunting body of photographs in which figures merge with interiors, surfaces, and fragments of space. Collectively their works reveal unexpected resonances: encounters with classical architecture, a fascination with the female figure, and an enduring interest in pattern and the domestic interior as a space of invention.

Beautifully packaged in a Wibalin-bound cover featuring a tip-on, the volume tells the story of how art is passed, challenged, and reinvented across the generations of one family.
