Reading Literary Text, Grade 4

Help your fourth-grade students build strong literary analysis and comprehension skills!

Each of the 9 units provides literary text in a variety of genres such as fantasy, comedy, realistic fiction, and historical fiction, as well as supporting activities that are easy to scaffold.

Activities include:

• Dictionary page to introduce content and academic vocabulary
• Close reading activity and close reading discussion
• Learn and apply activities covering vocabulary, the literature genre, and literary analysis
• Reading comprehension activity
• Literary response writing activity

• Folk Tale: “Why Br’er Lizard Can’t Sit” (Adapted from Why Lizards Can’t Sit as retold by S. E. Schlosser)
• Realistic Fiction: “Expert Pet Sitters”
• Comedy: “Pigs Is Pigs”
• Fantasy: “The Whale’s Throat” (Adapted from How the Whale Got His Throat by Rudyard Kipling)
• Thriller: “The Metamorphosis of Greg” (Adapted from The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka)

This resource contains teacher support pages, reproducible student pages, and an answer key. This is a reproducible resource (photocopying of lessons is permitted) for single classroom or individual home use only.
