Although initially trained in prehistoric human biology and mortuary archaeology, Gordon's interests shifted to contemporary populations when she came to Natick in 1983. During 1984-88, she planned and led a major anthropometric survey of the U.S. Army that included more than 132 body dimensions on 8,997 soldiers.
