John Sainty worked in the House of Lords, 1959–1970, 1974–1990, retiring as clerk of the parliaments. From 1970 to 1974 he worked at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London, compiling several volumes on the personnel of government departments, 1660–1870. He has published widely on the House of Lords and its personnel. He has also served as a commissioner on the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, 1991–2003, and is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Royal Historical Society, and the Institute of Historical Research. The volume contains two chronological lists: first of creations in the peerages of England and Great Britain from the accession of Charles II in 1649 to the union with Ireland in 1800 and secondly of creations in the peerages of Ireland from the accession of James I in 1603 to the last such creation in 1898. Each entry specifies the date of creation, the names of the grantee and both the principal and any subordinate titles conferred. Where a peerage was granted with a special limitation in remainder details are provided. Finally included are the sources from which the information is derived, together with an indication of where the texts of the patents of creation are to be found.
