She appears regularly on CTV's Your Morning, CP24, and The Good Stuff with Mary Berg. Her travels around the world inspire her recipes, blending diverse influences with authentic Indian flavors. Vijaya lives in Toronto with her husband and children.Ever since I was little, I have always been surrounded by good food. My mom came from a home of well-seasoned cooks who would artfully use local ingredients—from her native Madurai, India—to put together scrumptious meals for her large family. These dishes were uncomplicated and focused on bringing out the best of each ingredient that was used.

This love of cooking has spanned generations in my family. My great-grandmother, an excellent cook herself, was once taken to a market where she encountered a man carrying a green snake. It was said that if she ran her right hand down the length of the snake that she would be an amazing cook for life, and she was! Similarly, at the tender age of seven, my mom was taken to a market where she did the same, and lo and behold, she now has a successful South Indian catering business that she has been running for more than 25 years in Toronto. Thankfully, I did not have to face this initiation. However, that family trait for preparing delicious, wholesome meals runs deep in my veins.

My earliest food memories take me back to the West African country of Cameroon where we lived until I was four years old before moving to Canada. I remember the warm paruppu sadam my mom used to make for me for lunch—a dish of creamy lentils hand-mashed together with rice with a big spoonful of nutty ghee. I also remember the fish kebabs my mom made for my second birthday laced with coriander, garlic, and hot green chilis, and my dad asking if they were too spicy for me. They were, in fact, just right.

The food we ate at home was an eclectic blend of Indian dishes with influences from my parents’ travels, and this always made mealtime an adventure. From West African barbecue green chicken, to nourishing rasam, to Chinese fried rice, dinnertime was always so fun.

Moving to Canada as a young child further broadened my food education. Unlike most kids, I would watch more food television than cartoons, and by age six I was eagerly bouncing into the kitchen to help my mom make dinner. Soon enough, I was creating recipes of my own.

My passion for food continued, and despite eventually pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration, I knew that I had to make food a permanent part of my career. I started a food blog and began sharing my recipes with my community of friends and family. That eventually evolved to sharing posts on Instagram, and one day someone happened to see my work and invited me to be on The Marilyn Denis Show. A couple of months later, I became one of the hosts of a national cooking show where I’d be teaching viewers how to make Indian food.
