First Feelings: Sad Unicorn

Exploring emotions and learning how to deal with them is an important part of social emotional learning for children. This sturdy board book, which features adorable artwork from the illustrator of Clever’s popular title Don’t Wake the Dragon, is part of the First Feelings collection of books from Clever. The story takes young readers along as Unicorn experiences some sad events: a broken toy; a friend getting hurt while playing; another friend dropping an ice-cream cone; and a day of playing baseball ruined by the rain. For each situation, young readers see the event that has led to Unicorn feeling sad, and then can lift the large flaps on every spread to see what might make Unicorn feel better. Engaging prompts on each page encourage children to try to think about why Unicorn is sad in a particular situation, and what might happen next to make her feel better. There’s even a prompt at the end of the book for young readers to think about different things that make them feel sad, and a spread full of flaps to lift.
