Will Cora find the treasure before Beto eats it all?

Storytelling Math celebrates children using math in their daily adventures as they play, build, and discover the world around them. Beto’s Berry Treasure is a playful exploration of mapping, featuring Chicanx (Mexican American) characters.Go on a pirate adventure in this bilingual book for Young children as part of the Storytelling Math series. A young boy with brown hair and blue glasses named Beto enjoys playing with his sister. His sister, Cora, with long brown hair, loves to pretend to be a pirate. Beto has an idea for how to get his sister to play with him. Beto gathers a basket of colorful berries as treasure and he creates a treasure map for Cora. Cora plays along but the first few maps need editing. Beto makes the map more accurate and clear for Cora, When Cora does find Beto in the kitchen he has already eaten all the treasure! The two gather a crew of stuffed animals to find more treasure together! Written in both English and Spanish this book highlights math concepts such as spatial awareness and perspective as well as social studies and interpersonal concepts. A great read for an elementary school classroom.
—Children's Literature

A little boy’s invitation to play turns into a coding activity in this math-forward story. Cora loves to play pirates, yet Beto wants to have a tea party. To get his sister out of her room, Beto draws a map to a treasure, which turns into a trial-and-error project for him. This bilingual story has side-by-side text in English and Spanish, yet the original English version already had Spanish phrases and words, and at times it’s repetitive. Instead of consolidating the single word exclamations, like “Vamos!” there are now two of the same word, crowding some of the pages with text. A glossary of Spanish words and a list of related activities can be found in the back. VERDICT Despite a busy design, this is a good purchase for libraries serving Spanish-speaking communities and where STEM books are needed or in high demand.
—School Library Journal
Jenny Lacika creció en Santa Fe, Nuevo México, donde aprendió a trabajar en equipo con un hermano mayor y un hermano menor.
