In 1938 he became a fellow of Magdalen College. He was Ford’s Lecturer in English history at Oxford in 1956 and Leslie Stephen Lecturer at Cambridge in 1961, and was a fellow of the British Academy. \u003ci\u003eThe Habsburg Monarchy, 1809–1918\u003c\/i\u003e was published in 1948. He was also the author of \u003ci\u003eThe Course of German History\u003c\/i\u003e;\u003ci\u003e From Napoleon to Stalin\u003c\/i\u003e; \u003ci\u003eRumours of War\u003c\/i\u003e;\u003ci\u003e The Struggle for Mastery in Europe, 1848–1918\u003c\/i\u003e;\u003ci\u003e Politics in Wartime and Other Essays\u003c\/i\u003e; and \u003ci\u003eOrigins of the Second World War\u003c\/i\u003e. He was a regular contributor to the \u003ci\u003eNew Statesman\u003c\/i\u003e and the \u003ci\u003eManchester Guardian\u003c\/i\u003e.
