Help struggling students reach their full potential with a research-based approach to support and intervention.

Drawing on decades of academic and action research, the authors, who work as an elementary intervention specialist and education professor, provide a comprehensive framework for developing effective intervention programs. Incorporating real-world examples and stories from the field, this resource offers school leaders and educators insightful guidance for creating a site-based intervention program to foster academic and emotional success in their students.

Using research-driven strategies for academic interventions including reading and math, the gear intervention model helps students realize their full potential in and out of the classroom by addressing academic needs alongside emotional growth, movement opportunities, and enrichment activities.

Implement a successful intervention program with:

  • Proven Research-Backed Strategies: Strom and Payne's expertise informs every aspect of developing an effective program.
  • The Gear Model Framework: A comprehensive approach integrating relationships, academics, emotional awareness, movement, and enrichment for balanced interventions.
  • Comprehensive Support Tools: Reflection questions, and practical tools assist educators in applying these strategies in their intervention programs.

Whether initiating an intervention program or improving upon an existing one, educators will discover the components and support essential for driving student success.

| "Life-changing education is anchored in relationships, directly related to classroom learning, and relevant to students. Students also deserve opportunities every day to participate in areas of passion as part of a well-rounded education. This book includes all of these elements and will help educators assess and improve their systems to better meet the needs of all students." | "Academic Intervention Success?is full of practical strategies to accelerate student performance across all populations. I look forward to using it as a book study for our team. Strom and Payne's Gear Model highlights core principles we live by here at Operation Breakthrough, including building strong relationships and partnerships, meeting students based on their skill gaps and interests, and using real-world learning opportunities to engage learners. Strom and Payne offer key ideas that encourage us to think differently about education, both within and outside of schools. The book is rich with examples of the five gears in action and provides opportunities to examine barriers to implementation. It also offers thoughtful discussion questions at the end of each chapter. This is an excellent tool for stakeholders committed to improving access and opportunities for all students." | "Drawing on decades of classroom experience and educational research, Strom and Payne's Gear Model provides a clear and replicable blueprint for educators to create intervention programs that fuel students' success! The authors effectively highlight the importance of strong relationships, integrated enrichment activities, and emotional awareness to building impactful intervention programs." | "With a clear belief in the academic success of each child, the authors introduce The Gear Model as a means to bring coherence to the intervention experience for students. Faith groups, university partners, non-profit organizations, after-school programs and schools will benefit from embracing The Gear Model as a systemic approach to academic intervention and student success. Reflection questions at the end of each chapter allow readers to reflect on the implications of The Gear Model for their unique context. This book provides a detailed roadmap for communities willing to collaborate across the system of support for children to build a comprehensive intervention structure focused on the whole child." | "With their new book, Strom and Payne have accomplished something very important—providing an approach to intervention that puts the focus on relationships rather than just assessment scores and data. The Gear Model presented in this book makes intervention seem actionable, more humanistic, and most importantly provides a pathway for all students to reach the potential that we know they possess. The resources and ideas in each chapter make it a worthwhile read for educators of all stripes." | "The worlds of higher education and K-12 education often seem distant and disconnected. Strom and Payne's collaboration in Academic Intervention Success serves as a powerful example of the learning and impact that can be achieved when systems align. Their partnership demonstrates the potential that emerges when educators across sectors work together in the service of learners."
