Arthur is the only Wonderling in the world—an eleven-year-old fox-boy with a pure heart and one ear to hear what others cannot. But in Lumentown, human-animal groundlings like Arthur and his friend Trinket (who resembles a kiwi—the bird, not the fruit) and mice like Peevil (who has the soul of a knight and rides in Arthur’s pocket) are oppressed. When Arthur sings a song about hope at an underground tavern and inadvertently inspires a rebellion, the wicked Lord Thistletick and his Department of Groundling Control crack down even harder on the groundlings. To make matters worse, the Singing Tree, whose roots entwine with—and protect—the whole world, is sick.
