The three authors have had many years’ experience of research and teaching in colour chemistry, and are senior academic staff in the School of Textiles at the Scottish Borders campus of Heriot Watt University. Dr Robert Christie has particular interests in dye and pigment chemistry, surface coatings and pigment applications, Dr Robert Mather in textile and polymer science and dye application, and Dr Roger Wardman in colour measurement and colour application. The broad chemical principles underlying the application of dyes and pigments to a wide variety of substrates – such as textiles, surface coatings and plastics – are explained and illustrated. The various technologies of colour application are discussed. The physical basis of colour and its instrumental measurement are covered and recent applications, for examples in electronics and reprographics, are also featured.
