Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on many major American superheroes. Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics' \u003ci\u003eX-Men\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eFantastic Four\u003c\/i\u003e and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics' \u003ci\u003eSuperman\u003c\/i\u003e franchise, the first issue of which featured comics' first variant cover. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciller, Byrne began co-plotting the \u003ci\u003eX-Men\u003c\/i\u003e comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with \u003ci\u003eFantastic Four \u003c\/i\u003e(where he started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including \u003ci\u003eNext Men\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eDanger Unlimited\u003c\/i\u003e.
