Raising Hare (Young Readers Edition): The True Story of an Unlikely Friendship

The New York Times Bestselling Sensation -- Now For Young Readers!

What would you do if you found a tiny, wild baby hare all alone? This illustrated young readers edition follows the true story of a woman who makes a split-second decision to bring one home, and the unforgettable journey of raising it as it grows into a fierce creature of the wild. This adaptation transforms Chloe Dalton’s acclaimed true story into an unforgettable middle-grade narrative. Blending animal adventure, emotional growth, and fascinating natural history, it offers readers ages 10+ the warmth of a pet story with the wonder of discovering the wild.

Imagine you could hold a baby hare and bottle-feed it. Imagine it living under your roof and running around your bedroom at night. Imagine that, more than two years later, it still ran in from the fields when you called it and slept in your house for hours on end.

When Chloe Dalton discovers a newly born hare left vulnerable in the countryside, she makes an impulsive choice that alters the course of her life: she brings the fragile leveret home and attempts to keep it alive. What begins as an act of rescue becomes an extraordinary long-term relationship with a creature that cannot truly be possessed or domesticated. As the hare grows—fierce, graceful, elusive, and increasingly drawn to the wild—Dalton is changed by the patience, humility, and attentiveness the animal demands. Raising Hare is a luminous true story about care, freedom, and the quiet ways nature can remake a human life. Newly adapted for middle grade readers with black and white illustrations throughout.
