Decido ir a quirófano. El ascensor no funciona, así que me dirijo a las escaleras. Antes de subirlas, corrijo el rumbo y salgo un momento porque noto que voy a llorar y no quiero que nadie me vea. Sentado en una escalinata, me cubro la cara con las manos y lo hago lo más silenciosamente que puedo, porque a mi lado hay familiares y desplazados.

Aquella noche se me congelaron casi todas las emociones. En los cuatro meses siguientes no volví a llorar. De no haber sido así, no habría podido seguir trabajando.

I decide to go to the operating room. The elevator isn’t working, so I head for the stairs. Before climbing them, I change course and step outside for a moment because I feel like I’m about to cry and don’t want anyone to see me. Sitting on a flight of steps, I cover my face with my hands and cry as quietly as I can, because there are family members and displaced people beside me.
That night, almost all my emotions froze. In the four months that followed, I didn’t cry again. If I had, I wouldn’t have been able to keep working.

If Only Healing Were Easier is the testimony of a doctor who decides to practice where almost everything is lacking. From Peru to Senegal and from Valencia to Yemen, Dr. Raúl Incertis’ humanitarian journey began at age eighteen in a modest hospital in Cuzco and led him all the way to Gaza, where he was caught off guard on that fateful October 7, 2023.
