With his usual narrative depth, he places us on a transatlantic ship where the world chess champion, a coarse and unpleasant man, mercilessly defeats all the passengers who sit down to play with him. However, a mysterious former Nazi prisoner manages to emerge victorious. The story reveals how this man came to possess his extraordinary mastery of the game, while exploring the connections between humanism and the inhuman.
