Virginia Woolf's second novel, Night and Day is a love story and comedy of manners in the best tradition of Jane Austen about the conflicts faced by two couples when trying to formalize their relationship. However, the plot also questions that literary heritage in the light of modern sensibility. The result is a novel that is both classic and renewing, in which the clash between society's expectations and personal desires is pointed out, and themes such as women's suffrage, the transience of experience and the possibility of achieving egalitarian relationships are explored.
