A Thorough Overview of Functional Surfaces with Nature-Inspired Structures Aspects

Biological surface is the first interface between the organism and the outside world. In the past several decades, nature-inspired surfaces with various functionalities have been intensively explored and the pace of research being done on them has accelerated. This book mainly discusses several typical functional surfaces with nature-inspired structures aspects, plus the latest research and some new insights on this topic.

Specifically, the book introduces the basic ideology of bionics and typical biological prototypes with natural structured surfaces. The basic principles, synthetic design, fabrication strategies of the nature-inspired structured surfaces (NISS) are discussed to guide the function integration of NISS. This book not only gives readers essential knowledge to solve critical bionic engineering and materials problems, but it also provides pertinent information and resources to generate new solutions and materials. Sample topics covered within the book include:

  • The seven kinds of nature-inspired functional surfaces with different structure features: structured antireflective surfaces, structured light trapping, structured antifogging surfaces, structure colored surfaces, oil-water separation materials, underwater superhydrophobic surfaces and structured responsive surfaces toward multiple gases/vapors
  • The basic principles, synthetic design and fabrication strategies, along with the advanced characterization methods and composition analysis techniques of nature-inspired structured functional surfaces
  • How to better understand nature-inspired structured surfaces from a holistic standpoint
  • Specific new ideas and concepts within the field to aid current researchers in their work

For materials scientists, engineers, surface chemists, bioengineers, and biotechnologists, Nature-Inspired Structured Functional Surfaces: Design, Fabrication, Characterization, and Applications serves as a completely comprehensive reference in understanding the complexities of nature-inspired functional surfaces with diversified structures, and their many practical applications in a variety of fields.
