He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 1983. From 1983 to 1987, he completed both his Internship and Residency in the Phoenix Integrated Residency Program. Dr. Goodwin continued his training as a Fellow in Maternal-Fetal Medicine from 1989 to 1991 at the University of Southern California.
