Todo arranca con la noche áurea. A partir de ese momento, el pueblo bebe milagros y muerte, por igual. Personajes que han habitado el pueblo durante años, como Laputa, el loco, el padrecito, son testigos de la cadena de desgracias que están por ocurrir, mientras esperan la llegada de una mesías de maíz. Así, las decenas de personajes que componen la narración se van pasando la estafeta para contar la historia de generaciones de amores, rencores, maternidades fe y guerra.
