Flying over South Africa

South Africa is Karel Tomei’s second homeland, a place where he lives two to three months a year. The trips that he made to make this book – in a two-seater helicopter, were spectacular. They landed wherever they wanted for maintenance and fueling. The longest expedition lasted several weeks and was 10,000-km trip from Cape Town to the edges of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana. South Africa is as big as Western Europe, and the book Over South Africa has been divided into the country’s nine provinces. Each with its own unique identity: wide brown rivers, flattened mountain tops and prehistoric red sand formations, juxtaposed with endless green savannas, huge lakes and untouched subtropical wilderness. The countryside of South Africa is largely undeveloped and very diverse. Karel Tomei (Rotterdam) has been establishing himself as an artist these past years and his aerial photographs are unrivaled.
