Head-pigeoning. I thought you would have heard of it by now.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Head-pigeoning?”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe bell rang again.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Gotta go!” said Danny, and ran off to find out how badly he’d flunked the quiz.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDanny and Wendell got off at the bus stop near Danny’s house. The dragon got about five steps before something warm and feathery settled on his head.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“It’s the pigeon again, isn’t it?” said Danny grimly.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Yep,” said Wendell. “Or \u003ci\u003ea\u003c\/i\u003e pigeon, anyway. I suppose there could be more than one.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis was not reassuring.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDanny hunched his shoulders and stalked down the sidewalk. There was probably no point in trying to get it off until he was close enough to the house to duck inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA passing car slowed down to stare at him.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDanny was no stranger to having cars slow down to stare at him, but usually it was because he was doing something awesome like standing on a rooftop wearing a cape or building a giant snow platypus. Merely having a pigeon on his head didn’t qualify.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Wendell! Hey, Wendell!”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWendell slowed down. Danny sighed and turned around.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eChristiana Vanderpool, the only person in school nerdier than Wendell, ran down the sidewalk after them. “Hey, Wendell, can I borrow that book on the Burgess Shale?”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Sure!” said Wendell.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“The what?” said Danny.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Very old rock. Had lots of squirmy things fossilized in it. Stuff nobody’s ever seen on earth before. Or since, for that matter.” She paused. “Did you know there’s a pigeon on your head?”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003e“Columba livia—”\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Yeah yeah, so Wendell said.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Quite a nice specimen,” said Christiana. You can teach it to fly mazes or something.” Danny tried to pry the pigeon off his head again.
