Description
In the context of the evolution towards 3rd Generation (3G) mobile radio networks, packet switched data services like the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and the Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) are currently being introduced into GSM and TDMA/136 systems world-wide. For network operators, equipment vendors and system integrators dimensioning rules have to be developed to plan and estimate the needed radio capacity that is needed for the predicted amount of user data. The GSM Evolution comprehensively provides the basics of GPRS and EGPRS comprising the radio interface and the system and protocol architecture will be described in detail.
Besides the introduction of WCDMA and UMTS as 3rd Generation Mobile Radio Networks, the further developed GSM networks, including GPRS and EDGE capabilities will be able to provide 3G services as well. Such enhanced GSM networks will be introduced in the next few years world-wide and will stay operational beyond 2010.
* Presents the basics of GPRS and EGPRS - the radio interface and system and protocol architecture
* Provides an in-depth description of GPRS, EDGE and GERAN networks
* Describes the evolution of GSM/GPRS networks towards GSM/EDGE Radio Access Networks (GERAN) and the GERAN standard
* Highlights the modulation and coding techniques for EDGE and network architecture for GERAN
* Discusses the traffic performance of GSM/GPRS and GERAN and the suitability of the performance results for radio network dimensioning
Ideal for all practitioners in the area of mobile radio and networking, network operators, planners, system integrators, vendors and application developers, researchers in the area of mobile radio and networking and also electrical engineering and computer science students, content providers, technical managers, regulators and sales personnel.

Peter Stuckmann is the author of The GSM Evolution: Mobile Packet Data Services, published by Wiley. The standards GPRS and EDGE significantly enhance the GSM standard for mobile communications by supporting packet-oriented data services with higher bit rates than currently possible. This enables transparent access to fixed packet data networks. While GPRS will provide data services prior to UMTS deployment, both GPRS and EDGE have the potential to complement 3G networks. Initially UMTS will only be available in areas with high subscriber density. With the availability of multi-mode terminals supporting both UMTS and GPRS/EDGE (GERAN), data services will be supported outside the UMTS coverage area by both GPRS and EDGE. Therefore packet data services based on GERAN are expected to play an important role in mobile communications far beyond 2010.
* Provides a detailed description of the architecture, protocols, applications and traffic performance of GPRS, EDGE and GERAN

* Presents the evolution of the architecture and protocols of GSM systems

* Includes GPRS traffic engineering and QoS issues

* Discusses existing and future applications that are likely to be utilized over the evolving GSM and 3G networks

* Features a unique collection of GPRS/EDGE traffic performance results for evolving network capabilities, protocol modes and various mobile applications

* Supplies an overview of potential mobile data applications and their traffic models including WWW, e-mail, WAP, MMS, Video and Audio Streaming, and Voice over IP
The GSM Evolution will appeal to all those wishing to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the GPRS/EDGE and GERAN communication principles, protocols and applications, and the traffic issues of cellular packet radio networks. Students and researchers as well as engineering professionals and technical staff will also find this volume a valuable resource.
