Con su primer libro Cuentos y chinventos ganó el Premio Casa de las Américas en 1986, y en 1994 el 3° Premio Nacional de Literatura por Las visitas. En 2004 y 2014 recibió el Premio Konex Literatura Infantil y Literatura Juvenil, respectivamente.
