Week-by-Week Packets : Comprehension (Gr. 5)

These low-prep weekly packets build students’ knowledge and provide practice in writing, vocabulary, and reading fluency. Each 5-page packet starts with two related narrative or informational passages that introduce high-interest topics, such heroes in history, natural disasters, various cultures, and more. This reading work helps students absorb the main idea of the passage and strengthen content-area knowledge. The rest of the packet builds on these texts, prompting students to write about what they read, test their vocabulary, and practice fluency skills. Perfect for independent work, weekly comprehension checks, extra reading practice, and homework!Week-by-Week Comprehension Daily Routine:Days 1 and 2: Reading for Meaning – Students read two short high-interest passages connected by the weekly topic. These texts may be narrative or informational. Short, focused questions prompt students to identify the main idea, determine key details, and use text evidence to support their answers. Carefully selected Tier 2 vocabulary from each passage is highlighted in a convenient “Words to Know” sidebar.Day 3: Writing to Build Understanding – A writing activity invites students to deepen their comprehension by responding to prompts that help them make meaningful connections, reinforcing both understanding and written expression.Day 4: Vocabulary in Context – Students revisit the Tier 2 vocabulary from both passages through targeted practice that helps them apply new words in multiple contexts, ensuring meaningful and lasting word learning.Day 5: Fluency for Comprehension – This final activity invites students to reread an excerpt or adaptation of one of the passages to improve both word recognition skills as well as their expressive reading, with appropriate rhythm and phrasing that reflect the meaning of the text.
