Index 532
"McGraw provides a valuable survey of topics and themes in American religion and politics. Edited collections tempt incoherence, but McGraw provides an editor's introduction to each part that helps make important themes evident and related. Politics is defined broadly in this volume."
—Glenn A. Moots, Religious Studies Review, Vol 43, No 2, June 2017
Barbara A. McGraw, J.D., Ph.D., is Professor, Social Ethics, Law, and Public Life and Director of the Center for Engaged Religious Pluralism at Saint Mary's College of California. Her publications in religion and politics and comparative religions include Many Peoples, Many Faiths, 10th Edition (with Robert S. Ellwood, 2014), Taking Religious Pluralism Seriously (with Jo Renee Formicola, 2005), Rediscovering America's Sacred Ground (2003). She has served on the American Academy of Religion standing Committee for the Public Understanding of Religion, as co-chair of AAR's Religion and Politics Section, and on the American Political Science Association Religion and Politics Section Executive Committee.
On a topic that tends to attract more heat than light, this remarkably expansive volume, which encompasses everything from Native American traditions to twenty-first-century developments, brings clarity and a diversity of perspectives to this important matter.
Randall Balmer, Ethics Institute at Dartmouth
This work offers a timely addition to the Wiley Blackwell Companion volumes on religion. Forty concise and crisply written essays, crafted by established scholars in the field, tender a fresh look at traditional topics such as the relation of church and state. But they also range far more widely, examining the role that religion has played in every aspect of American political life. We see the vibrant and often contentious interplay of impulses toward “holy order” and “sacred liberty” from the beginning to the present. The book provides a rich resource for students, general readers, and specialists in the field.
Grant Wacker, Duke Divinity School
With contributions from established figures as well as emerging scholars in the field, the Companion to Religion and Politics in the US will quickly become an indispensable reference work for those probing the complex pasts, presents, and futures of religion and American politics. Chapters take up a wide array of historical, conceptual, political, and legal concerns, and explore the dynamics of religion and politics including, but by no means limited to, the contested relationship between church and state.
