This volume will focus on and emphasise the clinical relevance of diabetic nephropathy, a relatively common problem of diabetes. It affects about one in three patients with Type 1 diabetes, and left untreated can lead to a progressive decline in renal function, accompanied by retinopathy and arterial hypertension, which, in turn, leads to cardiovascular disease - a common cause of death in these patients. Christoph Hasslacher, Head of Department at the St Josef's Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, has specialised in diabetes and its associated complications, particularly diabetic nephropathy, for many years, both scientifically and clinically. He has published many scientific articles on this topic. He is a representative of the 'Diabetes and the Kidney' working group of the German Diabetes Organization.
