One morning in 1904, xenobiologist Ada Franklin wakes up in her own grave. Months into a study of angelic activity, Ada’s research partner betrayed her, stealing her life’s work, a prototype designed to enable human-angel communication. But Ada was not wholly unprepared. Missing specimens and stolen notes have long hinted at powerful forces behind their research.

Angelic infestations have kept the original thirteen colonies from expanding westward, but Manifest Destiny is a growing force in the new century, and Ada’s attempted murder suggests that being able to communicate with—and perhaps control—angels is a power worth killing for. Ada tenuously allies with her monstrously transformed ex-lover to hunt down her research partner and steal back her prototype before his greed upends the nation.
